Lucasfilm has announced that Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, will create a new Star Wars trilogy.

Johnson will write and direct the first film in the trilogy, with Ram Bergman producing the movie.

The trilogy is separate from the episodic Skywalker saga, and Johnson will introduce new characters to Star Wars.

No release dates have been set for the films in the new Star Wars trilogy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in theatres in the US on 15 December.
