YouTube blocks music in Finland

3 December 2017

YouTube has blocked large amounts of music in Finland, after it was unable to reach a new licensing agreement with music rights organisation Teosto.

Teosto represents the rights of 31,000 local artists and 3 million international artists in Finland.

Negotiations between Google and Teosto have dragged on, according to the parties.

“In the background to this happening are prolonged agreement negotiations between Teosto and Google,” said Teosto.

“Even though an accord has been reached on temporarily continuing with the current agreement early in the morning of November 30, Google still went through with the withdrawal. According to a notification from Google, they will start returning content to YouTube on Thursday 30 November.”

Google then posted an update to its support page, saying that the content has been reinstated.
