Blasting through your foes with a chunk of metal that has smaller pieces of metal exploding from it can be a very satisfying experience – hence the immense popularity of the FPS genre.

Here’s a list of the FPS games that brought our trigger-happy hearts the most joy and left our wallets weeping, according to data from Wikipedia’s List of best-selling games.

1. Duck Hunt

Duck Hunt was first released in 1984 by Nintendo for their gaming console, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Since then, it has racked up 28,300,000 sales and probably countless more digital duck lives.

Players make use of the NES Zapper, an electronic light gun accessory, to shoot the ducks and progress to the next level after a certain number of kills.

2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

“Remember, switching to your pistol is always faster than reloading.” is the phrase Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare has etched into the minds of 15,700,000 buyers.

This title was the fourth entry in the Call of Duty series but the first to be set in modern times. Its single-player campaign received critical acclaim and has some of the most iconic missions in the FPS genre.

3. Halo 3

Number 3, rather aptly, is the third entry in the Halo series.

A cybernetically enhanced supersoldier called Master Chief demolishes alien races.

“Where do I sign up?” is probably what 15,000,000 buyers asked themselves while furiously ripping their wallets from their pockets.

4. Half-Life

Valve’s debut product brought us the adventures of the scientist Gordan Freeman who fights to survive against the aliens that have invaded the Black Mesa Research Facility. With 9,300,000 sales worldwide, it remains a classic.

What’s that? Yes, of course, I’m still waiting for Half-Life 3 to be released.

5. GoldenEye 007

“Bond. James Bond.” is probably what reverberated through the developers’ skulls as they pioneered an FPS with innovations like stealth elements and split-screen multiplayer.

Even though it was released in 1997, it remains a beloved classic with 8,000,000 sales worldwide.

Rank Title Sales
