Gaming has become one of the most profitable industries globally, and many titles gross hundreds of millions after release.
Hollywood has often tried to cash in on the success of these games by creating movies using the same IP.
This then begs the question of what the highest-grossing game adaption movies are.
This list won’t include recent titles such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2 that haven’t yet reached the end of their theatrical run and are still making money.
5. The Angry Birds Movie
Worldwide box office: $352 million
Mobile gaming is one of the biggest sectors of the gaming market, with titles such as Candy Crush and Clash of Clans generating massive amounts of yearly revenue.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that a movie based upon the prolific Angry Birds franchise would do well.
Despite receiving mediocre reviews from critics and viewers, it grossed over $350 million and even inspired a less-successful sequel.
4. Uncharted
Worldwide box office: $383 million
The Uncharted series is a classic PlayStation exclusive and is among the most beloved franchises in gaming.
The 2022 movie based on the series quickly rose to the top of the box office after its debut in February.
The movie follows the origin story of Nathan Drake, the game’s protagonist, who is played by Tom Holland.
Like the Angry Birds Movie, Uncharted received average reviews from critics and viewers.
3. Rampage
Worldwide box office: $428 million
Rampage stars Dwayne Johnson, the prolific actor who has seemingly has appeared in every upbeat action movie in recent years.
The game is loosely based on the Rampage game series, which was first released in 1986, and follows a player who turns into a giant monster due to genetic experimentation.
The movie alters this slightly by focusing on the fight against three genetically mutated animals going on a rampage.
Rampage received a solid audience reaction and slightly higher critic scores than the previous two movies.
2. Detective Pikachu
Worldwide box office: $433 million
Pokemon is one of the most well-known game franchises in the world, and has been represented in every medium possible.
It has over a dozen animated movies, a TV series, and even a mobile game.
Detective Pikachu is an adaption of a Pokemon game and is one of the more unique stories to be found within the Pokemon universe.
This is the first game adaption on this list to have received overall positive reviews from both critics and audiences.
1. Warcraft
Worldwide box office: $439 million
It is no coincidence that the highest-grossing film on this list is based upon one of the most successful gaming franchises in history.
Warcraft is based on the first Warcraft strategy game and, by extension, World of Warcraft — the most successful MMO in history.
Despite is overall box office success, Warcraft performed poorly in America, and as a result, no plans were made to make a sequel.
Warcraft also received poor scores from critics and average scores from audiences.
