France has elected to ban English gaming terms

2 June 2022

French officials have announced that they are banning the use of English gaming terms in favour of French words, as reported by the Guardian.

While this is amusing, it is unlikely to force French gamers to change their habits.

France’s government has expressed concern about the overuse of English coming at the detriment of French, so this choice, given the scale of the gaming market, isn’t surprising.

This new set of bans will require official gaming organisations to substitute gaming terms like Streamer and Esports with their French translations.

Whether this will have the desired effect remains to be seen.
