PlayStation won’t be attending Gamescom 2022

Sony has confirmed to German publication Games Wirtschaft that PlayStation will not attend Gamescom 2022.

Many fans were hoping that highly-anticipated titles such as God of War Ragnarök and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 would make an appearance at the event, but these hopes have been crushed.

PlayStation joins various other notable publishers who will not be attending Gamescom 2022 — including Nintendo, Activision Blizzard, and Take-Two Interactive.

Sony is usually one of the largest exhibitors at Gamescom, and historically has won awards and been used for showcasing third-party games.

However, it seems many publishers have stopped planning pre-release game demos since the pandemic, and therefore would have little to show at a big public show.

Instead, publishers like PlayStation have focused on revealing the newest game releases on their own terms, such as Sony’s State of Play.

Despite numerous high-profile absences, Gamescom’s organisers claim that over 250 companies will attend this year’s event — although only a handful of major publishers including Bandai Namco, THQ Nordic and Koch Media have publicly confirmed.

While GamesCom organizers have not released an official exhibitor list, the entire exhibition centre and all of its connected halls have been reserved for use — so fans would still expect some exciting announcements, reveals, and trailers.

Gamescom 2022 will be both an in-person and online event, running from 24-28 August.
