Guy Jackson successfully crowdfunded over R1 million on Indiegogo.
Jackson hoped to fund a new instrument, the Lumen electronic handpan, inspired by the steel Hang handpan.
Jackson found there was a market for these handpans because of how difficult they had become to obtain online.
“A second-hand Hang… has been seen on eBay for over $9,000. Even modern acoustic alternatives sell for upward of $2,000.”
Being electronic, the Lumen is able to change key and even the instrument that is being reproduced.
It will also offer audio and MIDI outputs, 4 or more hours of playing, and charging via USB.
Although the products initial run has currently sold out, you can still contribute and purchase from the campaign here.
