Where are DStv’s gaming and tech channels?

SuperSport recently announced that it would be broadcasting the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive ELeague tournament, making it the first local broadcaster to show eSports content.

While undoubtedly popular, this prompted the question as to whether this was just a one-off deal or if we could expect more of this type of content going forward.

We asked SuperSport’s Clinton van der Berg whether there was any demand for gaming and technology specific channels and where he saw the future of games and tech broadcasting heading in South Africa:

“The evolution of eSports/gaming broadcasting will depend largely on the public’s appetite for it,” said van der Berg.

“SuperSport has only just dipped its toes in the water, so to speak, but we are encouraged by the early feedback.”

“If this continues, SuperSport is likely to exploit all manner of technologies to ensure world-class broadcasts.”

“These are early days, suffice to say that we make eSports available via linear, On Demand and streaming. We’ll continue to monitor this space.”
