Version 9.0 of Unicode has been released, bringing with it over 72 new emojis including “shrug”, “facepalm”, “fingers crossed”, and “selfie”.
This follows controversy after Apple pressured Unicode to drop the “rifle” emoji following recent mass-shooting incidents in the United States.
The new version also introduces a number of other important features including over 7,500 new characters and support for a number of African languages, including Fulani and new dialects of Swahili.
