The video streaming services you can watch in South Africa – from as little as R29 per month

12 May 2026

South Africans have access to a wide range of video streaming services – many of which are available at affordable prices, while a few are completely free.

In addition to the well-known multinational platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Disney+, and YouTube, South Africans can enjoy several more niche and even local video-on-demand (VOD) streaming platforms.

One notable recent change to South Africa’s VOD ecosystem is the shutdown of one of the country’s largest streaming services, Showmax, which has migrated to DStv Stream.

Several platforms have recently increased their prices, too. Crunchyroll jumped from R39 per month to R55 per month, while its top tier increased from R49 to R65 per month.

Netflix prices also jumped between 13-20% in March 2026, depending on the tier you choose.

Affordability reigns supreme

Amazon Prime Video remains one of the most affordable VOD platforms in South Africa, at just R79 per month. It has retained this price since 2021.

It is also one of the many platforms that offers an even more affordable mobile streaming plan. Amazon Prime Video’s mobile streaming subscription is just R29 per month.

This makes it one of the most affordable options in South Africa.

Other affordable mobile streaming plans include Disney+ at R49 per month and Netflix at R59 per month.

Mobile plans typically offer lower resolution streaming that saves bandwidth – often as low as 480p.

There are also several completely free options, like eTV’s eVOD and SABC+.

You can stream eVOD content for free with ads, or pay R50 per month for an ad-free experience.

We’ve compiled a list of many of the most popular video streaming services in South Africa, and their pricing.

Dedicated sports streaming services have been excluded.

Several paid subscription services also offer a free trial, which is noted in the table below.
