Resistance 3 review roundup

11 September 2011

Insomniac’s PS3 exclusive sci-fi shooter Resistance 3 came out last week, and most major publications have published their reviews, which for the most part are highly positive.

We published out own Resistance 3 review on Friday, and our resident PS3 aficionado Dan gave it a very solid 90/100, calling it “one of the most enjoyable shooters I’ve played in recent years on my PS3, the kind of game that might cross your mind while you’re at the pub, sitting in traffic, slaving at work, eating dinner or trying to concentrate on a movie.”

But you don’t have to take his word alone, here is what other publications have had to say about the game:

Videogamer 9/10

One of the biggest surprises of the year. Played alone or with a friend the campaign here is of the highest order, providing an experience that feels different to the competition while managing to finally build on what the series has always had going for it. Read more

Joystiq 4.5/5

Resistance 3 isn’t just a great game full of marked, inspired improvements over its predecessor — it’s a declaration of intent to become the new heir apparent to the sci-fi shooter throne. Read more

IGN 9/10

Offers the same polished experience as the last two games in the series, only this time the action is more focused and tightly structured. Insomniac clearly wanted to make this game a more harrowing and personal experience, and by focusing its attention on a smaller, more personal story within the invasion, it has succeeded without question. Computer and Video Games 8.7/10

There’s a greater feeling of depth, life and narrative to the tale and the gunplay is satisfying even if we do have to reserve some criticism for the AI, which still shows itself to be rough around the edges at times. Read more

Gamespot 85/100

Tightly balanced action and a superb array of guns make Resistance 3 a blast. Read more

1UP B+

It’s easy to say that this is the best Resistance title, but it’s also easy to say that it’s not Insomniac’s best game. Read more

Giant Bomb 4/5

Insomniac makes the same, face-palming mistake from Resistance 2 of placing important story details in notes hidden in the environment, notes tied to unlocking trophies. Added narrative through optional exploration is fine, but please, please don’t hide crucial bits of insight within things you may never come across. Read more

Eurogamer 8/10

First-person shooter design has reached an evolutionary ceiling and desperately needs some mutant DNA to push it onwards and upwards. Resistance 3 could have provided that genetic jolt; but Insomniac has chosen to look back to how we used to play rather than grapple with how we could play in the future. As understandable as it is, that cautious approach results in a game that is extremely enjoyable, but never as imaginative as you want it to be. Read more

Game Informer 7/10

With no reason to connect with these characters and little in the way of action to separate itself from the packed FPS crowd, Resistance 3 makes it clear that the series doesn’t belong amongst the triple-A competition in the genre. Read more
