If you know anything about iOS gaming, then you will be familiar with the original Infinity Blade, which made a name for itself by serving up crisp 3D visuals along with solid game design and a compelling combat system.

The first mobile game to be powered by the Unreal Engine 3, Infinity Blade raised the bar in terms of what sort of games can be played on Apple devices. Critically acclaimed, the game earned a solid 87/100 Metacritic score, making it one of the most well received iOS games released to date.

The sequel was released late last week, and has since gone on to earn a Metacritic score of 91/100, which makes it the second most critically acclaimed iOS game released to date, after the casual hit Where’s My Water?

Infinity Blade II was announced in October alongside the iPhone 4S reveal, and promised enhanced graphics, a revamped storyline as well as new weapon classes, including dual wielding and heavy weapons. The classic shield and sword combination is also available to use in the game.

Gamespot has called it “the perfect sequel”, and IGN reckons it’s “a must own”. I just finished downloading it, so hopefully we will have a full review up on MyGaming in the next week. In the meantime, we have rounded up some excerpts from international reviewers.

Remember, you won’t find Infinity Blade II in the local iTunes store because Apple hates us or something. Be sure to check out our guide to getting a US iTunes account if you don’t already have one.

Eurogamer 8/10

The novelty of repeated bucket-kicking has dampened a little. And towards the end, the game just starts throwing high-level bastards in your face to see how many you can take. The core formula that defined Infinity Blade and made it so interesting has been tarnished in the move to write an App Store description with some higher numbers than before. Read more
