The role playing genre is second only to first person shooters when it comes to global popularity in gaming.
While it will be a while before we see the likes of Skyrim or The Witcher match the Call of Duty franchise in terms of sales, RPGs have retained a strong presence in modern gaming.
This year saw the release of a handful of truly great RPGs. We decided to aggregate the Metacritic and Gamerankings scores to get a conclusive list of the 5 best RPGs of 2011, at least according to reviewers, and here they are:
A strong Game of the Year Contender, it comes as no surprise that Skyrim should take top honours as the most highly rated RPG of 2011. Despite players reporting dozens of bugs, the game has been extremely well received. Its massive world and the endless possibilities it offers players who choose to explore it thoroughly make it a favourite among gamers and critics alike.
2. Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) 92.91%
We haven’t actually got our hands on a copy of this gem, but the consensus is that it’s a fantastic open world RPG. Eurogamer called it “a game that invites us to reassess an entire genre, pointing to a bold future while nodding its respect towards the past. It’s a towering triumph.”
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (PC, PS3, 360) 90.21%
One of the better games of 2011, Deus Ex: Human Revolution did the iconic franchise proud, combining a solid action-adventure-stealth gameplay template with dynamic RPG components. The world was also rich and engaging, making for a truly compelling and engaging gameplay experience.
4. Dark Souls (PS3, 360) 88.74%
The spiritual successor to the PS3 exclusive Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls carried across many of the vital components which made its progenitor such a hit. A gruelling difficulty level, deep RPG system and unique combat mechanics make Dark Souls one of 2011‘s must play games.
5. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (PC) 87.97%
A favourite in the MyGaming offices, The Witcher 2 was one of our favourite games of 2011. Incredible visuals, a beautifully realized world, an engaging combat system and mature narrative made it one of the year’s best PC games. This list would not be complete with The Witcher 2 on it.
