Gaming companies are hiring

11 March 2012

Most gamers would jump at the chance to work for their favourite gaming company. Luckily there seems to be no end of open positions in both software and hardware gaming companies.

Below are some of the stand-out positions currently on offer:

Blizzard

Are you an exceptionally skilled 3D character animator well versed in Maya and related tools? Do you have a solid grasp of the principles of body movement, anticipation, overshoot, follow-through, squash and stretch, and forward / inverse kinematics? Then Blizzard wants you to work on their next generation MMO game.

The post requires you to be self-motivated, with good communication skills and a great “team-player” attitude, which counts-out half of the would-be applicants. The post is also based in Irvine, California, United States, which cuts out the rest of the people reading this. But it’s okay, we can dream.

EA

If California isn’t your cup of tea, what about Sweden? EA is looking for an Audio designer to work of their future titles. The successful candidate needs to be “capable of producing life-like, authentic, high-fidelity in-game audio and music as well as acoustically pleasing supporting audio for HUD and menus.” Presumably banging on tin cans and blowing into half empty glass coke bottles won’t cut it, so I’m out.

The advert also mentions that applications should have at least a Bachelors degree in Computer Sciences, and pack strong mathematic skills in trigonometry, calculus and linear algebra. If that sounds like your idea of a good boogie then feel free to apply.

Ubisoft

If cars are more your thing, Ubisoft wants you. Well they actually want a vehicle artist to “design, create and maintain in-game vehicle art assets”, but you might be that person.

The person getting the job will need excellent 3DS Max modelling skills, a keen interest in cars and car-design, and a commitment to quality. They’ll also need a desire to relocate to Newscastle upon Tyne in the UK, which doesn’t quite have the same benefits as Sweden (see above image for example of Swedish benefits).

Still, if you enjoy 3 days of sunshine a year and warm beer, check out the job posting here.

I wonder if this is enough talent to get the job?

Razer

Do you have a passion for Macs? How about Razer mouses? If so you may be interested to know Razer is looking for a Macintosh software developer.

You’ll need 5 to 10 years of Objective-C and C/C++ programming behind your name, and be able to demonstrate knowledge of Xcode and Daemons. The advert makes no mention of being passionate about the colour green, though knowing Razer that will probably be a plus.

Benefits of the job include living in Carlsbad, California, and sleeping easy knowing that all of the 5 people who actually play games on a Mac have access to dedicated gaming peripherals.

Big Mac

If you saw Mac and thought of this, the position isn’t for you

Nvidia

Nvidia wants someone who can handle the heat. So if Senior Thermal Engineer sounds like your kind of job title you should go here.

The job requires you to design and develop cooling solutions for Nvidia GPU products; creating prototypes and playing with thermal analysis software like IcePak and FloTHERM without getting hot under the collar.

Before you get too fired up about the position though, it’s only open to people who are authorised to work in the United States. So if your name begins with Bashar and ends in al-Assad you should probably pass on this one.
