Debriefing: Mass Effect 3 launch event in Cape Town

Proving that if you can do something once, you can do it again even bigger, better, and more badass. Mweb GameZone‘s Mass Effect launch event on Friday 9 March was, well, bigger, better, and more badass than their Battlefield 3 launch event last November.

Teaming up with EA South Africa, as well as a bunch of sponsors including Rectron, Samsung, Kalahari.com, GamersGate, and Red Bull, Mweb hosted over thirty gamers for a night of junk food, fizzy drinks, and humanity’s last desperate stand against total annihilation. It’s like a package deal.

Which way to the laun- oh, there it is.

The M-Cave venue was fitted with state-of-the-art anti-Reaper tech, featuring four Xboxes, four PS3s, and eight PCs, all hooked up to Mweb’s 100Mbps (!) DSL for party play cooperative counter-offensive manoeuvres. When your very existence is at stake, you need fast, reliable internet access.

The friendship corner - because when you're all in the fight together, there's no time for console wars. If the <spoilers> and the <spoilers> can make up, so can Xbox and PS3 fanboys.

This is grooouuund controooool to Commander Shepard...

Military-grade fried chicken, dipped in the guts of our enemies.

Prizes handed out over the course of the evening included a hot N7 edition of the game for PS3, which went out to Roger Burgess – who, interestingly enough, won a ticket to the event by dancing half-naked at the 2upGamers event the week prior. So that worked out nicely for him, and maybe it makes up for all the YouTube videos and GIFs. Maybe…

Moments later, he stripped. He really did.

Some guy also won a copy of The Sims: Showtime expansion, but I didn’t take a photo to protect his identity.

Wait, no. I did. Lol.

Big up to Mweb, EA, and everybody else for putting together such a super event. In between 2upGamers, CTPGamers, and events like this one, it’s like the Cape Town crowd is becoming a real community. Sniff
