The Witcher 2 has already had an incredibly impressive run on the PC platform, winning a bucket-load of awards at the end of last year; but the widely-acclaimed silver-haired hero’s second adventure has finally made his way onto the Xbox 360 thanks to a ported ‘Enhanced Edition’; but what does this really mean?
The Enhanced Edition of The Witcher 2 gives you 4 more hours of quests, new cut-scenes and cinematics and over 100 improvements, when compared with the initial version of the game. It is available right now for Xbox 360 and PC, but all of you who already have the standard Witcher 2 PC game can download a free update and enjoy the extended action.
But, if you’ve never played The Witcher, let’s catch up on this highly-regarded series so that you know what’s happening in this dark-fantasy RPG.
What is a witcher?
A witcher is a man-made mutant, who is highly trained in killing monsters and creatures using acrobatic swordplay and an array of other weapons while under the influence of potions. Acting as somewhat of a mercenary, the protagonist Geralt of Rivia takes up contracts from villagers, peasants and kings to go and eliminate abominations around a number of kingdoms.
Ladies around the world often swoon over him – Geralt often remains chivalrous, but also doesn’t let a lady in need go unsatisfied.
As you can imagine, these plot points result in quite a mature experience, with blood, gore and nudity being standard fare throughout the game.
So what have I missed?
Well, not that much. The most important thing to know is that Geralt saves the king of the Temeria kingdom from an assassin who appeared to be a Witcher – usually identifiable by having yellow cat’s eyes.
There are a few secondary characters that are carried over from the first game, but you’re caught up to speed relatively quickly with some introductory segments.
That’s not to say the story in the first game isn’t worthy of mentioning, but you won’t need to retrace the original adventure in order to understand where the sequel kicks off.
Geralt gets caught up in a plot involving political intrigue, mythical creatures and forbidden magic, which takes him on a continent-spanning adventure within Assassins of Kings.

So what’s so cool about the Witcher 2?
The Witcher 2 features a branching storyline which has multiple endings depending on the paths you choose during your play-through.
There is a broad storyline that will play out as planned, and there is also much freedom and many choices to explore throughout the game, that will change the way in which you experience the story.
The world itself is largely open, and provides hours and hours of exploration in the deep forests and various locales of the game.
The combat relies primarily on melee attacks, with Geralt able to use thought-out and planned sword strikes, bombs, and parrying and dodging counter-attacks to defeat enemies; but players will have to be careful, as Geralt is vulnerable despite his strengths.
The Enhanced Edition of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is available for download right now for previous owners of the standard edition, while the Xbox 360 version is launching worldwide today.
