E3 is just around the corner, and in preparation for the colossal gaming expo, we’ve put together some of the biggest games that we know will be on show come next week.

Trying to list the games on offer is a tough job given the overwhelming amount of games heading our way, although there’s a handful of unmissable titles that are sure to draw big attention.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

The Metal Gear series has taken a serious turn with Raiden’s upcoming spin-off adventure, and it has got us intrigued. Instead of being developed by Kojima’s studio, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is being developed by Platinum Games, who most recently handled Bayonetta and Vanquish. Despite seeing some gameplay demonstrations and a trailer, not too much is known about Revengeance. Hopefully Hideo Kojima can give us some more insight into the over-the-top detour for the highly-acclaimed series.

Grand Theft Auto V

E3 better bring some much-needed GTA V gameplay footage, as gaming’s most notorious series is making its long-awaited return at the show. The next game will be set in the fictional city of Los Santos, which will be modelled around Los Angeles, California. GTA V will feature unparalleled open-world freedom, and the unnamed protagonist is said to be a new character to the series, providing a new chapter in the franchise. Rumour has it that some familiar faces from the previous games will also be making an appearance in GTA V.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting, following a viral outbreak which wiped out most of humanity. The world is now an overgrown mess as nature reclaims the land. Players will take on the role of Joel, as he has to escort a young girl named Ellie to a particular quarantined zone. Both characters will come into play, allowing Joel to command and assist Ellie in helping the two on their journey. Developed by Naughty Dog (Uncharted series), The Last of Us also features gorgeous visuals – something that the studio is known for. Visceral and brutal combat is on offer to make the steel-stomached gamers cringe. Expect to see The Last of Us in action come E3.

Assassin’s Creed III

We’ve already seen an impressive gameplay trailer of Assassin’s Creed III, although we want more at E3. AC III will conclude the story of the series background hero, Desmond Miles, who relives memories through various throat-stabbing ancestors. ACIII will bring new tricks to the table, allowing Connor to use new weapons, such as tomahawks, as well as climbing and free-running in the wilderness and through buildings.

Tomb Raider

After some ups and downs, everyone’s favourite treasure hunter is set to make a comeback, as Lara Croft is getting her much-needed reboot. A pre-E3 teaser video gave us a glimpse at the presentation Crystal Dynamics have in store for us. The reboot is set to put a 21 year-old Lara in the fight of for her life as she is shipwrecked on an unknown island, forced to deal with excruciating emotional and physical pain to survive.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Following on from 2010’s release, Black Ops II will pick up where the original story left off, and taking players where the series has never been before – the future. Hopefully E3 can redeem some of the initial sceptical impressions that the game is looking a little dated. Black Ops II promises to combine solid storytelling with the series’ tried-and-tested shooting mechanics. The story will play out through flashbacks of the past, while primarily taking place in the near future, where the technology once created to protect the world, has now been turned against us.

God of War: Ascension

God of War: Ascension looks set to go back in time as a prequel within the famed hack n’ slash series. We will see Kratos in a new light prior to him taking on the gods, as the game will chronicle the angry Spartan’s servitude to Ares for ten years. The game will also be bringing something the series has never seen before – multiplayer. After the recent multiplayer demonstration, we expect Sony to show off more gorgeous graphics, more angry shouting and definitely more brutal kills at their E3 presentation.

Resident Evil 6

The Resident Evil series is synonymous with horror, and the long-running franchise is making its return this year with Resident Evil 6. Capcom should have a huge focus on RE6 and show the new features and elements that the fright-fest is bringing to the table, most notably the new additions like being able to fire while moving, from the ground, as well as the ability to get into cover. Resident Evil 6 is looking to bring an epic scale of heart-pounding action to the Resident Evil name.

Far Cry 3

Playing as a stranded survivor, Far Cry 3 takes players back into the sun-kissed tropical setting the series is known for. Running on Ubisoft Montreal’s impressive Dunia 2 engine, the game is set to feature a sandbox environment, allowing players to take advantage of their large open-world in order to approach situations in a number of ways, not to mention looking absolutely gorgeous. Ubisoft have teased us with some of the E3 insanity that awaits us, and we can’t wait to get some more.

Borderlands 2

2K’s booth will obviously be buzzing with Borderlands fans, and Borderlands 2 looks to improve upon the original highly-acclaimed FPS/RPG hybrid from 2009. Gearbox have increased the customisation and randomising elements of the game’s weapon generator to bring even more variety to the battleground, while the planet of Pandora is looking a lot prettier this time around with detailed wastelands, forests and snowy fields. A return to Pandora couldn’t come quicker.
