Without sugar-coating it, the PS3 had a rocky-start. The incredibly high launch price and strong-but-not-strong-enough launch titles put Sony’s shiny black console at a disadvantage behind Microsoft’s console counterpart, the Xbox 360.
That said, the Playstation 3 has definitely grown into its own and reinvented itself after a slimming diet. Most importantly, the quality games rolled in once the console gained its deserved momentum.
What are the best games on the system? We looked to Metacritic and GameRankings to find out, with ratings listed respectively in the brackets below.
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception – (92/91.76%)
The third instalment in the acclaimed Uncharted series had a tough act to follow in the stellar second entry, but Drake’s Deception didn’t disappoint.
Uncharted 3 features some of the biggest and most insane set-pieces to date, and whether Drake is hanging from the edge of a cliff or out of a plane in flight, the game never lets down on the action. Uncharted 3 also evolved the story of the franchise and questioned Nate’s childhood and obsession with treasure. Still one of the best looking games around, Uncharted 3 finds a rightfully deserved spot at number 5.
God of War III – (92/92.54%)
Fans waited a long time to get some god-killing action onto PS3, after the technically impressive God of War II on PS2.
The wait was worth it and Kratos came back angrier, and more violent than ever. God of War III took full advantage of the PS3’s capabilities, escalating the series’ larger-than-life scale, as gamers were treated to colossal battles with Titans, highly-detailed environments, and incredible in-game cut scenes which fulfilled Kratos’ story of revenge on the gods. “Epic” is a word often overused in the gaming world, but if anything warrants its use, it’s God of War III.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – (94/93.64%)
After the series jumped back in time with Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Guns of the Patriots took a step forward and followed-up with a much older, wiser and weathered Solid Snake.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is an impressively strong entry in an already phenomenal franchise. The game gave players a lot more choice and options in the way they approached situations, adding a new level of depth into the stealth elements. The game wasn’t light on the action either, and MGS4 delivered some of the best boss encounters and moments the series has to offer.
LittleBigPlanet – (95/94.67%)
Media Molecule’s stitched-up platformer, LittleBigPlanet, exceeded expectations across the board. What looked like an unknown side-scroller, turned out to be one of the most creative and community-driven games ever made.
LBP had an unbelievably fun single player experience, although the game really shone when friends were thrown into the mix. The hundreds of thousands of user-generated levels cemented the game’s fan-base and longevity, to make it one of the most beloved games on the PS3.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – (96/96.46%)
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is the closest you can get to gaming perfection. The second adventure of charming treasure-hunter Nathan Drake proved to be not only a step-up from his debut, but upped-the-ante in terms of what gamers have come to expect from the medium.
The production values showed through as Naughty Dog delivered an experience worthy of the “best PS3 exclusive” title. Among Thieves’ visuals, story and solid gameplay pushed the franchise and Naughty Dog into a bracket where people will expect nothing but the best from the series name and developers.
