Games you can play this week

While things couldn’t get any faster with Usain Bolt smashing a 9.63 in last night’s Olympic 100m final, the gaming industry has to recuperate before things get chaotic with Sleeping Dogs and Darksiders II next week.

That said, this week Spidey makes his return to PC, along with a few “smaller” games to tickle your fancy.

The Amazing Spider-man (PC)

Like the movie, The Amazing Spider-Man is set to reboot and reinvigorate the Spider-Man name by returning players to the open-world environment of New York, with free-roaming web-swinging and a new Web Rush mechanic, which allows players to freeze time and plot their next move, resulting in quick and fluid traversal through the city.

Despite not loving it, MyGaming’s Nic Simmonds did find some enjoyment in Spidey’s latest adventure:

Mechanically, there is nothing really wrong with The Amazing Spider-man. The graphics are decent, physics systems solid (mostly), and the basic game design builds on trusted and proven formulas in the action-adventure genre. If that’s good enough for you, then have at it.

Hybrid (XBLA)

From 3rd Cell, the team behind Scribblenauts, Hybrid is a third-person shooter where players join one of two warring factions in a combination of cover-based aerial combat and jet packs.

It will also feature a persistent world war through online multiplayer, where individual matches contribute to each faction’s success.

The fast-paced shooter is hitting Xbox Live Arcade this week, and deserves some attention if you’re a fan of arena-based mayhem.
