e-Sports at rAge 2012: what to expect

South Africa’s big gaming event, rAge, is just around the corner, and while everyone is excited for the games on offer, another core element of the expo is the e-Sports and competitive gaming taking place.

In anticipation for the climax of some of the country’s biggest tournaments, let’s take a look at what’s going down at rAge 2012.

DGL 2012 Championship

The 2012 Do Gaming Championships has been underway for the last few months, and with rAge on the radar, there’s no better place for the tournament to conclude.

With more than 600 gamers expected to take part, the events should play out in spectacular fashion. The players for the finals can be viewed by clicking the respective tournaments.

DGL 2012 Championship prizes

The prizes on offer are valued at half a million rand – the biggest prize in the history of the DGL.

The FIFA PS3 Championship will see R13,000 in cash prizes up for grabs, while the Xbox 360 tournament gets R13,000 worth of cash prizes, sponsored by Telkom.

The CoD4 DoGaming Championship features prizes worth R90,000, with the winning team taking home R18,000 in cash and five Alienware X51 desktops.

The Gran Turismo 5 Championship players will be battling it out for their share of R14,000.

The Modern Warfare 3 Champs will have R60,000 in cash on offer (R50,000 sponsored by Megarom and R10,000 sponsored by Monster Energy). The winning team will receive R27,000, along with 5 Alienware X51 PCs and 60 cases of Monster Energy drinks.

Battlefield players will be fighting for a stake in R100,000 prize, with the winning team getting R45,000, plus eight Alienware X51 PCs.

And finally, the StarCraft 2 Championship prize breakdown includes R50,000 of cash (thanks to Logitech), with the winner claiming R22,500 and an Alienware X51 PC.

NAG gaming league

rAge 2012 will play host to the finals of the NAG League of Legends championships.

League of Legends

PC players will take their battle online at the event, in 5 vs. 5 matches.

The finals will be split into three divisions, with 42 players competing in each division.

The prize pool has yet to be announced.

Pokémon National Championships

While there won’t be any shortage of on-screen action at the show, the competitive trading card scene is getting some love.

10 of the 11 official Pokémon leagues around the country have been battling it out to grab a place in the finals of the TCG National Championship.

The finals will take place at the rAge 2012 gaming expo, and will be played in front of a live audience.

50 players will be trying to outwit one another for the prestigious title of champion, in the Senior, Masters and Junior Division categories respectively.

The rAge expo 2012 will be taking place from 5 –7 October at the Coca Cola Dome in Johannesburg.
