5 best game studios

Edge Online have listed the top 50 video game studios that are in operation today, and we’ve had a look at the top 5, giving MyGaming’s reasons for why we love them so much. These are Naughty Dog, Platinum Games, Nintendo EAD, Mojang, and Valve.

Naughty Dog

Naughty Dog has to be commended on a phenomenal run since the studio was founded in 1986. From the release of the original Crash Bandicoot trilogy, to being acquired by Sony Computer Entertainment, and through the development of the phenomenal Uncharted series, Naughty Dog has maintained a high standard of quality.

With Naughty Dog currently onto a new IP, The Last of Us, which looks to be one of the most interesting games coming our way, the development studio seems to be going from strength to strength.

Platinum Games

Platinum Games hasn’t been around for all that long, but the Japanese-based studio has spun gold since its inception.

The studio’s flagship title, MadWorld, was an ambitious project to say the least. A violent and mature title on Nintendo’s Wii console was a daunting task. Platinum pulled it off with style and have gone on to release Bayonetta, Vanquish, and are currently taking on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. When Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima trusts you with his brand, it says a lot.

Nintendo EAD

Nintendo’s in-house studio have cranked out hit after hit throughout the company’s existence, and the studio is looked to in order to bring the big exclusives to Nintendo’s systems.

From classics such as the original Super Mario Bros. and Nintendogs, to the Super Mario Galaxy series, Nintendo EAD has been at the forefront of delivering what Nintendo fans (both new and old) desire.

Great things should always be expected of Nintendo EAD, and given its heritage, its rightfully so.

Mojang

The worldwide phenomenon that is Minecraft has captured the imagination and creativity of gamers everywhere, but where did it come from?

Mojang is the Swedish game studio behind the block building affair, and is headed up by Markus Persson (also known as Notch), who was on the verge of being hired by Valve before starting Mojang.

With the monumental success that Minecraft has been, it’ll be interesting to see if Mojang’s next offerings, Scrolls and 0x10c, deliver on the refreshingly unique experiences now expected from the studio.

Valve

The only bad thing anyone has to say about Valve, is that they have taken too long to make Half-Life 3.

The American video game company, which Gabe Newell is co-founder and head honcho, has produced some of the strongest games in history – including Half Life, Half Life 2, Portal, Left 4 Dead and DOTA 2.

Valve has also branched out into the digital distribution realm with the Steam platform, pushing the company into a league of its own and establishing it as a powerhouse of today’s gaming industry.
