Bethesda’s new RPG: Hunted – First look

Publisher Bethesda, who recently bought us RPGs such as Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Fallout 3, has announced a brand new RPG; Hunted: The Demon’s Forge.

The game will be released for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, and was showed off at last weekend’s Game Developer’s Conference.

Billed as an RPG that is being built around cooperative gameplay, Hunted is a dark fantasy RPG following the story of two mercenaries, and is said to be an update to the classic dungeon crawler gameplay model. Players will spend their time exploring various locations and hunting for special crystals. Alongthe way they will unveil some sort of insidious plot, but no details about this have been released.

The game will be played from a third person perspective, and will make use of an action based combat system. Both characters will have a variety of melee, ranged and magic based abilities, and each will have their own speciality. Players will be able to switch between characters at check points dotted throughout the game.

Sticking with tried and tested archetypes, Hunted has divided two stalwart RPG classes between the two characters. E’lara is female, and will specialise in tasks generally associated with rogues, while Caddoc is a burly warrior, and essentially performs the role of a tank. Using the strengths of each character to complement each other will be an important part of succeeding in Hunted. This plays well to the focus of the game, which will be cooperative online play.

Players will also have to explore their world and its hidden treasures. According to Bethesda, 40% of hidden locations are easy to discover, 40% are hard, and the remaining 20% are “super hard.” The world will consist primarily of towns, dungeons, and outdoor environments.

No release date has been confirmed for Hunted, and whether or not it will be more than another action orientated fantasy RPG remains to be seen. The cooperative element is fairly fresh, and RPG fans should definitely take note.
