Science is an amazing thing. It helps us realize our dreams of going into space, traversing the depths of the ocean and ordering a 100% beef burger in less than 2min. But science has given us the single most amazing thing: Videogames. These ‘Videogames’ are not just our source of our entertainment, they are the beginnings of our evolution. They are going to shape us into the superhumans we’ve always wanted to be.
Well, sort of.
According to this study gamers have the superhuman ability to control their own dreams. Yes you heard that correctly, we have the mental capacity to consciusly alter the outcomes of our dreams.
How it works is that gamers have similar dreams to that of lucid dreamers, the chilled out people who meditate and do yoga and stuff. Basically Dhalsim.
The 2 groups share a strong of spatial consciousness and both have inhuman concentration spans.
Lucid dreams are dreams in the third person essentially, and gamers seem to have the mutant ability to dream in this nature. Hmmm, I wonder how this came about? Maybe the unearthly amount of Gears Of War we play…
In another study, they found that gamers would frequently switch from first and third person and had a remarkable amount of control over their dream-selves but no control over the environment or other characters in their dream world.
They soon discovered that gamers who experienced nightmares, soon became the antagonists in the nightmares, so instead of running away from an ominous threat, they fought back. I knew I was intense, now I have science to back me up.
The science-people are now thinking of ways to apply this sort of information into real world applications, especially for non-gamers who’ve experienced some form of trauma that they cannot mentally overcome.
Controlling dreams? Being inherently way more hardcore than the average Joe, sissy-pants-run-away-from-your-nightmares-type? What next? Super strength? A biological supersuit that my brain has fabricated? The future is unpredictable, by my gosh will it be awesome for gamers…
Grant Hinds is the presenter for GameState, South Africa, if not the world’s, greatest online TV Show. He’s cooler than all you non-gamers. Science has made that fact.
