Final Fantasy’s best supporting characters

Every Final Fantasy has a protagonist the game is focused on and around whom the storyline is based.

But, for every hero, there is a sidekick whose help is needed to survive the countless battles you and your party are bound to encounter.

To honour these largely unsung heroes, we present to you the best supporting characters from the Final Fantasy series.

Quina Quen – Final Fantasy IX

If Lickingtung and Gordon Ramsay had a child, it would would be Quina Quen.

This genderless creature eats frogs, has a childlike disposition, is curious about everything around it, and is always on the lookout for something to eat.

This little fellow is gentle at heart, a good fighter, and a great addition to any party. Plus, his fork attack is not to be scoffed at.

Fran – Final Fantasy XII

Fran is one of the most stylish characters in the Final Fantasy series, with her long hair, good dress sense, rabbit ears, and bow all coming together rather nicely.

We did not learn much about her and her ambitions in the game, and she often came across as cold, but she was an essential part of our journey’s success.

If Balthier was the self-proclaimed “leading man”, then Fran is definitely our choice for leading lady. (Sorry Ashe).

Cait Sith – Final Fantasy VII

A cat riding a giant stuffed toy Moogle – can a character get any more perfect?

Cait Sith was the life of Final Fantasy 7 – with his constant joking, use of a megaphone as a weapon and occasional betrayal (spoiler?).

Although he was not always the strongest in battle, Cait Sith was a quality character with a personality far ahead of the curve in his time. Also he’s a cat, which feeds the crazy cat lady in all of us.

Sazh Katzroy – Final Fantasy XIII

Sazh is a middle-aged man with a huge afro that houses a Chocobo Chick – what a legend.

Sazh also has a Eidolon Brynhildr (try saying that 10 times) which is a car that transforms into a fiery statue.

When he is not looking after his Chocobo, Sazh shows us the strength of a father’s love as he endeavours to bring his son out of crystal state – even willing to sacrifice his own life to save his offspring.

Mog – Final Fantasy XIII-2

Moogles have made an appearance in nearly every Final Fantasy game in some form or another, and Final Fantasy XIII-2 was no different.

Mog has little bat wings, wields a clock staff, and, of course, has the usual pom-pom at the end of his antenna.

Mog played a predominant role in the game, accompanying Sarah and Noel on their journey through time, and although he did not battle he was always part of the party (strangely, as Sarah’s weapon. Don’t ask us, Square Enix does weird things).

His bubbly personality and innocent demeanor endeared him to most fans.
