Free-to-play games that rock

31 May 2014

The ability to experience something without forking out a single cent makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside. With video games, it’s no different, as long as the game is not a complete load of swill.

Here are some of the better free-to-play games available at the moment, as long as you don’t mind having to put up with in-game item purchase windows every now and then.

Ghost Recon: Phantoms

Metacritic – 70

Ghost Recon: Phantoms has everything that makes a Tom Clancy game great, combined with great tactical features and clans. This team-based title is a great game that is now available on Steam – so grab some friends, throw some grenades, and have some fun.

War Thunder

Metacritic – 75

If you like tanks and planes from World War 2, and blowing them up, then you will have a blast playing War Thunder. The game is available on PC and PS4 and is constantly being updated with content. There are also rumours that the game will soon receive naval ships as a playable vehicle, and map sizes will increase.

Planetside 2

Metacritic – 84

A sci-fi shooter with dozens of players on gigantic maps – I’ll take a serving of that. Planetside 2 is one of the more successful shooters around, and soon PS4 owners will be able to enjoy it, too. I love free games.

Hearthstone

Metacritic – 88

Hearthstone brought the world of Blizzard and all its awesomeness to a trading card game. The game was recently published on iPad and PC, and has been praised by many who have played it. Hearthstone is a great free game, with an extremely smart and addictive card system that should not be ignored.

Path of Exile

Metacritic – 86

Definitely one of the best free games I have ever played, Path of Exile is for all the Diablo 2 fans who thought Diablo 3 was a let down. The game has a great loot system and a classic RPG battle system that puts most top-down RPG’s to shame – free-to-play at its finest.

Dota 2

Metacritic – 90

There’s not much to say about Dota 2 that the game, and its Metacritic score, does not say already. It is played and loved by many, and if you are good enough at it you could even turn it into your career. The salary? How does a large chunk of over R62 million sound?
