The PS4 is the best console on the market right now, and, according to the sales stats, is the most popular, too.
But – and there is always a but – there are problems with Sony’s latest masterpiece.
Here’s a list of what is currently wrong with the PS4.
The UI is terrible
Everything about the PS4’s UI is boring. The slow, relaxing music was novel in December, but now it annoys the hell out of most gamers.
The blue background is, well, blue, and that’s about it. There is a bit of movement in the background, but it is barely noticeable.
The block interface when selecting a game is not too bad, but it does not save the overall UI from failure.
The camera serves no purpose
I played Playroom once when I got my PS4 and I have not used the camera since. It just sits there, and I always need to wipe dust off of it.
When are cool camera features coming Sony? I need to find a use for it.
I can’t pause a download
The first Wednesday of every month normally sees a PlayStation Plus update rolled out.
The free games are great, but if you start two games at the same time, then halfway through want to prioritize one the only option you have is to delete one of the titles.
Why can’t we pause downloads?
Pressing the touch pad instead of the options button
The touchpad is a nice addition to the Dualshock 4, but it size and placement relative to the options button is not ideal.
The options button, a rather important part of the controller interface, needs to be a little bit bigger – look at it, it is tiny. I don’t have small, pixie hands.
No, I cannot listen to your music mix on your USB
Fortunately, most people are migrating to Smart TVs which have USB slots and music playing capabilities, but this does not excuse Sony from not allowing us to slot a flash stick into the PS4 and play some tunes.
It is 2014, the PS4 costs over R6,000 and it does not have a USB media feature – no wonder PC gamers call us peasants.
Way too many indie games
Every month we get free games thanks to PS Plus. The “quality” of these games over the various platforms is not exactly balanced, though.
“Here PS3 owners, have a AAA sports title; PS4 players, here’s a game made by some guy in his garage,” is normally the line we get.
I am tired of playing 16-bit-looking games on my 1080p, 60fps machine. Give me more polygons. In fact, give Killzone Shadowfall away and let us all get on the multiplayer train.
No charging cables with new controllers
When you buy a cellphone it comes with a charger – so why, when I spend R899 on a Dualshock 4, do I have to use the one and only cable that came with the console?
If you have two or more controls, swapping them out constantly becomes rather irritating as you share their only source of life. And to answer your follow up question, no, I will not buy a charging dock.
Switching off the console instead of ejecting the disc
You will not be faulted for pushing the wrong sensitive, tightly-placed button that controls on/off or disc eject on the PS4. I have often powered off the console instead of ejecting a disc.
I realize this is a rather lame point, but if I am going to complain, I may as well do it properly.
