Top 20 games of the last generation

10 September 2014

Let’s be honest, the PS3 and the Xbox 360 don’t have long to go before they are phased out. Along with the Wii, and the games that came out on all the aforementioned platforms in addition to PC and handhelds at the time, they have officially become the “last generation”.

The last-gen should not be forgotten, though, for it gave us many great games. To honour this epoch, we take a look back at the 20 bestselling games of the last-gen era.

20. Halo 3 – Xbox 360 – 14.5 million copies

Considering the popularity of the Halo series, it is quite surprising to see Master Chief so low on the list. The reason may be that this was not exactly the best looking game ever made, although it was great fun to play.

19. Diablo III – PC, PS3, Xbox 360 – 15 million copies

18. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl – Nintendo DS – 17.36 million copies

Even though the Black and White series saw two nearly identical releases, the first one still sold more than the sequel – about 14.42 million copies. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, however, took it to the next level, selling 17.36 million copies.

17. Brain Age: Train your Brain in Minutes a Day – Nintendo DS – 19 million copies

16. Call of Duty: Ghosts – PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PS4, Xbox One – 19.5 million copies

Call of Duty: Ghosts released on nearly every platform possible last year and has sold over 19 million copies, making it the 5th biggest Call of Duty game to date.

15. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – PC, Xbox 360, PS3 – 20 million copies

14. Wii Fit – Wii – 22.7 million copies

This game totally gets you in great shape and makes you super healthy, that’s why all professional sports teams are using it, right?

13. Mario Kart DS – Nintendo DS – 23.34 Million

12. Kinect Adventures – Xbox 360 – 24 million copies

The game’s strong sales figures can, just maybe, be contributed to the fact it was bundled with every Xbox 360 that came with Kinect. They still count it, though.

11. Call of Duty: Black Ops II – PS3, Xbox 360, PC – 24.2 million

10. Grand Theft Auto IV – PS3, Xbox 360, PC – 25 million copies

GTA on a bestseller list? No! You don’t say. Number four in the series kicked ass all over the show, and the sales confirmed it.

9. Call of Duty: Black Ops – PS3, Xbox 360, PC – 26 million copies

8. Wii Play – Wii – 28.2 million copies

Selling a game that happened to be bundled with a controller really helped Nintendo push this to 28 million copies.

7. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – PS3, Xbox 360, PC – 28.2 million copies

6. New Super Mario Bros – Wii – 30.38 million copies

5. Wii Sports Resort – Wii – 33 million copies

Seriously, how many Wii games are going to be on this list?

4. Grand Theft Auto V – PS3, Xbox 360 – 34 million copies

3. Mario Kart – Wii – 35 million copies

Once again, Nintendo showed they know how to sell a game – and this one wasn’t even bundled with a console or controller.

2. Minecraft – PC, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, Xbox One – 54 million copies

Minecraft has done well for itself, releasing on every platform under the sun, and still going strong. Well played, Notch, well played.

1. Wii Sports – Wii – 81 million copies

Shipping with every Wii console gives this game an unfair advantage, and whether it should be above Minecraft is debatable. But stats are stats, and Wii Sports is at the top of the pile.
