All games were made to be played. Some games, though, were made to be replayed. And replayed. And replayed.
Thanks to the advent of multiple endings and non-linear stories, your actions in a game affect its outcome to the extent no two play-throughs have to be the same.
Here are a selection of games that fit that bill, and have a stack of different endings.
Chrono Trigger
Endings – 13
Chrono Trigger had a whopping 13 different endings depending on your actions during the game. If you killed certain characters the game would end in a certain way, and if you allowed yourself to be killed by Lavos then you got to witness the end of the world.
Not bad for a game made in 1995.
Final Fantasy XIII-2
Endings – 8
Final Fantasy XIII-2’s 8 “paradox” endings were difficult to unlock and required quite a few hours of grinding in certain areas of the game. These endings all show what happens after the game to different characters.
Even after the main games release, the Lightning DLC contained another ending, pushing the story even further.
Fallout 3
Endings – 29
Fallout 3 had 26 endings included in the main game, with the Broken Steel DLC adding three more with its release. The ending you unlocked depended on your Karma level and how you conducted yourself during the game.
Although 29 is an impressive number, the endings did not have much of an effect on the story, post game.
Mass Effect 3
Endings – 8
Considering all the choices you have to make in the Mass Effect trilogy, you would expert part three to have more than eight endings.
Mass Effect 3’s endings have been the topic of game industry debate for some years now. Some hate them, some love them, but one thing is for sure: the franchise is not at its end yet.
Heavy Rain
Endings – 24
Heavy Rain was a great game with a gripping storyline, memorable characters, and 24 endings. For each character there were 6 different endings, all depending on who is alive when the game ends.
Lose a character in the game, then you lose an ending.
Beyond: Two Souls
Endings – 24
Beyond: Two Souls was just as complex as Heavy Rain when it came to decision making, with the endings determined by who lived and who died.
To view all the alternative endings you would have to reload the various chapters and make a different decision compared to your previous play-through.
Star Ocean: The Second Evolution
Endings – 70+
I know what you are thinking, 70 different endings sounds impossible – but it’s true. The Second Evolution has many characters who you interact with during the game, and all of these characters influence how your journey ends.
This is most noticeable when it comes to pairing characters up romantically. If you are planning on achieving every ending in the game, say goodbye to your life.
