We all like completing a game 100% – not only for the sense of accomplishment we feel, but the fact that we also receive cool unlocks along the way.
Some games, though, give us rewards that are – frankly – a load of steamy poo.
Here are some of the worst video game unlocks gamers have had the misfortune of receiving.
Super Mario Bros. – 1 Million Coins Start Screen
The most recent Nintendo 3DS release of Super Mario was all about coins. You would collect thousands of them during the game with the ultimate goal of collecting one million.
Once you finally collect one million, you unlock an alternative start screen.
That’s it, an alternative start screen for months of work. Thanks, Nintendo.
Concept Art – every game ever
Most games include the ability to unlock concept art, which shows you what the game looked like in its early stages.
How about you put all those pictures together and bundle it with the game, that would be better.
Don’t, however, make me perform ridiculous tasks so I can look at a picture of something which is, frankly, quite useless.
Soundtracks – every game ever
Another pointless unlockable “prize” are game soundtracks.
Yes, it is nice to listen to the music of a game on command, but it is still in-game (sort of) and it’s not like we can’t listen to it while actually playing the game.
The only way this would work is if developers gave me the game’s tunes in MP3 format – that would be worth a few extra hours of effort.
Ultimate Weapons after the Big Boss – A lot of RPGs
Some RPGs have ultimate weapons that are so powerful they even make Chuck Norris flinch (kidding, that’s impossible).
The only problem with these ultimate weapon unlocks is that you normally earn them after defeating the final, uber boss.
Cool, so I have finished the game and now you give me a weapon which can incinerate all my foes – makes sense.
I suppose giving us the ultimate weapons earlier would make the game too easy, but rather leave them out completely then.
Jumping – Ni No Kuni
Ni No Kuni might be the best RPG I have ever played, but it featured an unlockable that’s questionable – the ability to jump.
What makes this even worse is that jumping serves no purpose in the game. You cannot reach higher platforms, nor could you jump over gaps.
Pointless and useless.

I have another one. Hearthstone, Curse of Naxxramas. Beat every boss on Heroic and …. get a card back. The reward was supposed to be larger, but when they launched, they changed it to only a card back.
