Quinton’s recent column titled “Does gay belong in gaming” drew strong comment from all types of gamers and readers, and it is with this in mind that I present to you a list of games where it is par for the course to be gay.
Unlike the comment section on a GaymerX post, this article is about being non-judgmental, and all are welcome to read and enjoy it.
Mass Effect
Mass Effect has a strong focus on the relationships you engage in with your crew mates. Throughout the series you could romantically interact with those who floated your boat.
Mass Effect 1 let a female Shepard get “involved” with Liara (who is Asari, an alien race that only has females in it) – but it was not until Mass Effect 3 that you could let your male Shepard shack up with other male crew members.
The Sims
The Sims is one of gaming’s modern titles which has always been viewed as a “pro-equality” title – even though the ability to foster same-sex relationships may have been a mistake in beginning.
Date, get frisky with, and raise a family with two Sims of the same gender, different gender, different race, you pick – it’s all good. Woohoos all around.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Skyrim, a land where same-sex marriage and the ability to live with your partner in peace is possible, even though it’s under the threat of immediate incineration by one of the many dragons flying overhead.
It’s not a homophobia thing, dragons don’t like anyone, really.
No attacks on Twitter, no fear of being laughed at in public, Skyrim is a no-judging zone.
The Last of Us: Left Behind
The Last of Us didn’t fail to impress when it came to the game’s DLC. During your journey you meet Bill, an openly gay man – who is not portrayed as a stereotypical gay man – whose lover committed suicide because of the way the world turned out.
Left Behind also revealed that Ellie was a lesbian.
Gone Home
The plot of Gone Home revolved around a lesbian relationship, and the story of two women who were in love but could not be together.
The game also deals with one of the character’s parents attributing her homosexuality to “a phase”, saying she “just hasn’t met the right boy”.
