Robotz DX
Robotz Dx is a reboot of classic Atari title Robotz, and is therefore unapologetically old-school in style. The game is a tactical shoot-em-up, with the action of each of the 30 levels taking place in a single-screen arena. The gameplay consists of destroying all enemy robots within 60 seconds. Certain destructible objects provide cover or blow up for extra points – some may drop bonuses. Despite the simple premise, this shoot-em-up is a challenge to beat.
Hydorah
Hydorah will appeal to the old-school side-scrolling arcade shoot-em-up gamer in everyone. The developers themselves describe it as the bastard son of the classics. Players will battle their way through a space-fantasy landscape accompanied by an original techno “retrofuturistic” soundtrack. True to 80’s arcade standards, there is one punishing difficulty setting – but glory can’t be earned without spilling some blood.
Streemerz
Streemers was originally created for an Action 52 remake competition and is based on a game of the same name. Streemers makes tongue-in-cheek references to Bionic Commando all along the way. Players will have naught but their grappling hook (a streemer) as they try to make their way up the levels, avoiding nasties such as pie throwing clowns, burning candles and bouncing balls.
The controls are very simple, yet the gameplay is extremely challenging – SNES challenging. Fortunately unlimited lives cushion any failure. You can grab the original Windows release or play an updated Flash version on Newgrounds or Kongregate.
Shoot First
Shoot First is a hybrid of the run-n-gun and roguelike genres – an action oriented rougelike of sorts. The levels are procedurally generated and players can strategise on how best to complete them. Slow and careful exploration can reap rewards such as useful equipment, keys to unlock exits, and AI companions. The run-n’gun approach can be employed when things get too crazy and finding the nearest exit is the only way to survive. The game also features a 2 player co-op mode.
It has recently been updated to version 1.2 ironing out a few initial bugs, so there is no better time to try it out.
Death Row Diner
Death Row Diner is the coffee break pick of the week. The game is a flow management click-fest involving a tough-as-nails lunch lady whom is trying to singlehandedly feed an entire prison population. Things get messy, and downright bloody on occasion, if you can’t keep murderously demanding scum well-fed.
