Getting old happens, and generally we deal with it quite well. Feeling old, however, is rather unpleasant and often makes you question your concept of time.

Reference points in history compound this problem, especially when you start up your favourite game or movie and see the little date stamp among the general introductory text.

In short: you have been warned about the dangers of the little trip through gaming history we are about to take. One which will remind you about your inescapable mortality and that Minecraft was not released “a couple years ago”.

Gaming History Lesson: 2014

Minecraft – 5 years old

Believe it or not, but your favourite sandbox game was released, in Alpha form, five years ago by Notch.

Sony PSP – 9 years old

Sony’s first step in the handled arena took place nine years ago. Now we bid farewell to the PlayStation Portable.

Xbox – 13 years old

Microsoft’s first console was released on 15 November 2001, and has amassed an army of loyal supporter since its debut.

First E3 – 19 years old

Taking place in 1995, the first E3 laid the foundation for the multi-million dollar events which take place annually.

PlayStation One – 20 years old

Damn, now this makes me feel like I am getting long in the tooth. Sony revealed its PS One console during a special conference in 1994.

Doom – 21 years old

The FPS which changed it all has spent a fair amount of time in the sun. Admitting to playing Doom since its release means two things: you are a pretty cool dude, and you are getting old.

Neo Geo – 24 years old

For those of you who don’t know about the Neo Geo, it was a cartridge-based video game console made in Japan. The brand was revived in 2012 with the Neo Geo X handheld system.

Luigi – 31 years old

Mario’s less famous counterpart was born at Nintendo’s headquarters 31 years ago – making him older than most of MyGaming’s workforce.

Atari 2600 – 37 years old

Arguably one of the cornerstones of the video game industry, the Atari 2600 console hit the shelves in 1977. Cue many years of playing Frogger and Tank.

Apple I – 38 years old

The Apple I was introduced 38 years ago with a price tag of just under $700 and less power than a Nokia 3310. Makes you feel better about your current PC, doesn’t it?

Admit it, you feel pretty old right now.
