MyGaming’s highs and lows of 2014

20 December 2014

2014 was a pretty good year for MyGaming.

The site has grown its readership steadily over the last 12 months, and we have had a lot of fun putting together bits of writing which you would find interesting.

2014 also saw the departure of James, former Overlord at MyGaming and chief negotiator in the forums. But I do not need to go about all of that, you were there and saw it go down first-hand.

Instead, we take a look at what the gaming highs and lows were for the MyGaming/MyBroadband team. For those of you who are unfamiliar with our awesomeness, a short description follows each member’s name.

Quinton

Quinton is a master of both business and gaming news and knows more than anyone in the world about Final Fantasy.

Your favourite game of 2014?

When you’re surrounded by so many things gaming it’s usually the top-of-mind stuff that hits home, so I’d have to say Dragon Age: Inquisition is my best game of the year. I haven’t even come close to finishing it yet, but it does everything I hoped it would and is the game Dragon Age 2 wishes it could have been. For the nostalgia vote, Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD were also tops in my books.

Your gaming highlight of 2014?

I don’t think I’ve been quite as excited about an E3 as I was for E3 2014 for a long time. The expo always has big announcements and media buzz – but it also gave us the first glimpse at the next Mass Effect, which really trumps all in my books. Talk of the next space adventure from BioWare, plus a possible now-gen release of the trilogy…well spank my ass and call me a Krogan, that’s all I want from life.

Your gaming lowlight of 2014?

Undoubtedly GamerGate. I know a lot of local gamers missed the boat or didn’t care about the drama at all – but the only material impact that’s come from the whole fight for “ethics in journalism” has been repeated threats and lots of voices drowned out or forced out of the industry. The purported good intentions aside, the whole thing is simply a blight on the name of gaming, and that made me really, really sad.

Jan

Jan is an expert on telecommunications and space and likes to ruin jokes with facts.

Your favourite game of 2014?

This is difficult. I really enjoyed Transistor and Walking Dead Season 2 this year. The Lone Wolf mobile game also kicked me right in the nostalgia. Diablo 3 felt like a brand new game after the 2.0 patch introduced the new loot system.

Your gaming highlight of 2014?

I became managing editor of MyGaming. It’s perfect! I get all of the credit for doing none of the work. Then if anything goes wrong I just blame Kevin (or sometimes Quinton, if I feel like mixing it up).

Your gaming lowlight of 2014?

As a South African consumer, little can go as low as the Rand this year. Not only does it affect game prices, but it was also blamed for the massive hike in PlayStation Plus subscription fees.

Gareth

Gareth is the business news expert and enjoys watching Liverpool win. (He has been sad a lot this year.) He’s also a man of few words.

Your gaming highlight of 2014?

My gaming highlight for 2014 was Hotline Miami which I bought on Steam for $1 or $2 ( I can’t recall). It was a gripping, adrenaline-fueled gunshot to the face.
