The Journey Down: Over the Edge

It’s amazing what one can do in Adventure Game Studio with some time and patience – The Journey Down: Over the Edge serves as a great example, which has been one man’s labour of love for over five years.

Over the Edge” is chapter one in this series – the game will follow Bwana and his trusted sidekick Kito, as they struggle to make ends meet at their waterfront gas station in an off-beat place called Kingsport bay. When all hope seems lost and the power company is on their case with a mean threat, something promising appears. A woman. A woman with cash.

Old school adventure gamers will feel right at home with this one. Considering this was a one man show, the production is top quality – a great art style with well rendered backgrounds and characters. The musical backing is good and suits the environments. The puzzles are sufficiently complex without becoming obnoxiously challenging. Expect a 125MB download.

Liferaft: Zero

Liferaft: Zero is a nifty little puzzle platform game. The gameplay mechanics involve the usual platform jumping, coupled with some wall-jumping tricks, and grappling and swinging from specific points. The game is set in a testing facility – very Portal-esque. The animations are smooth and the controls work perfectly. Some cool sound effects round off the presentation.

Death rewards mistakes but there is a never ending supply of test subjects. Those who enjoy a challenge should be prepared to spend some time mastering the last of the 30 levels. There’s also some candy to grab on each level, and collecting all the pieces throughout the game will grant access to a bonus level.

Victorian BMX: Death on Wheels

“Oh dark mother of death, give me the strength to pull off sick air while striking down these unseemly bastards. Let my ride gather speed and go exponential in the name of unholy boredom!” Do you like rockin’ tunes? Do you enjoy collecting the souls of gentrified Victorian era folk? Do you secretly wish you were the skeletal ambassador of death? Are you wondering what on Earth I’m talking about? Look no further than Victorian BMX for an explanation, you shan’t be disappointed.

One Button Arthur

MyGaming’s coffee break pick of the week, One Button Arthur is in the same vein as One Button Bob – Bob even makes a cameo appearance along Arthur’s journey. Players have only one button with which to control Arthur as he makes his way across the numerous levels.

Depending on the particular game screen, Arthur will perform a different action through the single click. Often this involves timing jumps as Arthur dashes headlong toward danger. The puzzles aren’t too complex, but they prove challenging the first couple of times since Arthur moves of his own volition. All along the way, your clicks are counted, so you can attempt to beat your best score in another run. There’s a cool little tune accompanying the game – overall, very addictive stuff. Those who prefer to use their Armor Games accounts can also play with Arthur and Bob.

e7

e7 is a puzzle platformer with some interesting gameplay mechanics. The player is in charge of a little space ship, tasked with infiltrating an alien planet and disabling a nuclear missle that has been targeted at Earth. The spaceship can depress itself into the spongy alien ground, and then launch high into the air. This is the primary means of navigating the puzzling obstacles, and destroying any enemies in the way. There are 20 levels to conquer – some jumping puzzle sections become aggravatingly difficult, so be prepared.
