The best games that were never made

You know that moment when you have a really great idea, but while thinking about this idea you realise it’s not going to succeed?

Video games are no different.

Let us take a look at some of the greatest games which had so much promise, but died before being fully developed.

Shadow Realms – Bioware

After many a teaser and some pretty decent gameplay footage being shown, Shadow Realms unfortunately had the plugged pulled in February 2015.

The game was praised for its unique multiplayer style, and merging combat from Darksiders with a Destiny-like co-op feel.

The fast-paced gameplay and hack-and-slash mechanics were a match made in heaven. Set in both a modern-day Earth and a parallel world of Embra, heroes possessing magical powers wake up and are pulled into a dark realm where they take on adventures, face off against creatures of the Shadow Legions, and basically save humanity.

Think about joining up with three friends and taking on armies of skeleton archers, each of you specialized in a different class with its own set of skills, that would be pretty epic.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII – Square Enix

Yes, I know that Final Fantasy XV is Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but what if we actually got to experience the Final Fantasy Versus XIII saga on PS3?

That would mean Square Enix would have another Final Fantasy in development right now for PS4 and Xbox One.

Final Fantasy XVI would be the next chapter in the series, something we have not seen or experienced before. I am just going to go with the Agni’s Philosophy trailer that melted our eyes back in 2012. Looking at that gives us a clear indication as to what Square Enix had up its sleeves.

I know we should be grateful for Final Fantasy XV, it sure looks good, but I just feel that it is not enough to make up for an 8-year development cycle.

The Agency – Sony Online Entertainment

The Agency was a first person shooter set to take the world by storm, but unfortunately it was cancelled in March 2011 along with closure of SOE’s Seattle Studio.

There were two planned Agencies at the time: U.N.I.T.E (The United Network of Intelligence and Tactical Experts), and ParaGON (The Paramilitary Global Operations Network). Each of these specializing in their own style of play and characters.

The game was set to feature traditional shooting mechanics, as well as driving around and mini games like casinos and card games.

Your character leveled up and you gained skill points that you could use to upgrade certain attributes. You would also gain new gear after missions.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned – Propaganda Games

We all know how not so great video games based on movies are. But Pirates of the Caribbean: Armada of the Damned might have been based on the franchise, not directly on a movie.

Lush islands to explore, creatures to slay, and a solid role playing experience to tie it all together, what could go wrong? Armada of the Damned was set in an open world, the player taking the role of James Sterling who was on a quest to travel the seas and build a reputation for himself.

The game was said to have a deep choice system that effected the game’s overall storyline, character, and ship appearance. To make it even better there were two playable classes that had two very different storylines.

A choice system that determined the outcome of the every aspect of the game and a beautiful world to explore – I want this now!

Prey 2 – Bethesda

Tying into the story from the original Prey, Prey 2 was first announced in 2011. You played as Killian Samuels, a U.S Marshal who is thrown into a sphere that transported him to another planet. A few years later and he is now a bounty hunter with no memory of where he came from.

Not much else was known about Prey 2, besides that it was going to be pretty great.

It is a pity that we will never get to play Prey 2, I loved the original.
