The season to eat a bunch of chocolate eggs, and regret it the next day, is nearly here. I am talking about Easter, of course.
And just like you used to enjoy running around your garden finding secret hidden objects, video game developers love hiding stuff in their games for you to find, too.
Here are some of the most memorable gaming Easter Eggs from recent years.
Destiny Loot Cave – Dying Light
In the early parts of Dying Light you come across a hidden cave after taking a swim. Upon entering, a message will pop us saying: “Your destiny is to build your legend (and get loot)”.
This pokes fun at Destiny’s loot cave that was discovered last year and quickly shut down.
Arkham City Map – Batman: Arkham Asylum
It only took over a year to find this egg that required you to blow up an inconspicuous wall. When it was discovered, gamers were impressed to find proof that a Batman: Arkham sequel was already in the works.
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare – Dragon Age: Inquisition
Dragon Age: Inquisition is a huge game with a couple of Easter Eggs of its own. One of them is a tribute to EA’s Plants vs Zombies series.
In the Hinterlands there is a farm that looks like it was just ploughed. Here you can see plants and what looks like lawn mowers. In the house you will read a note that describes a terrible attack by zombies at night and that plants came to life and saved the farm.
Minecraft Caves – Borderlands 2
Borderlands is full of comical references to games and gaming franchises.
An obvious egg in Borderlands 2 comes in the form of a cave full of Minecraft Creepers. Killing all these Creepers will reward players with a nifty pixilated helmet accessory.
Final Fantasy XXVII – Dues Ex: Human Revolution
Dues Ex takes place in the future, and given that Final Fantasy is such a successful franchise, and that Square Enix is responsible for both Final Fantasy and Dues Ex, a poster tribute to Final Fantasy XXVII is in the game.
Lost Island – Just Cause 2
In the corner of the map in Just Cause 2 you will find an island. This island is a dangerous place where any aircraft that gets close to it is struck down by lighting.
Sound familiar? It is the island from the TV series Lost.
Dead DOOM – Duke Nukem 3D
In the third level in Duke Nukem 3D’s Hollywood Holocaust, you will enter a church and behind the altar you will press a button that will open up secret room.
Upon entering this room you will find a Space Marine that looks very similar to the character that plays DOOM.
The Last of Us Newspaper – Uncharted 3
The Last of Us was supposed to be revealed before the release Uncharted 3. This did not happen, and unfortunately someone forgot to take the newspaper out of the game that actually gave gamers insight to the upcoming title.
Secret Cow Level – Diablo 2
The most iconic secret level in video games was in Blizzard’s Diablo 2 – the Secret Cow Level.
Once you get there via a red portal, you will face axe and sword-wielding cows.
This level pays homage to the rumours that if you clicked on a cow multiple times in Diablo it would open up a portal to a new land.
The Final Quest – Final Fantasy IX
It took 13 years to find the final quest in Final Fantasy IX. This secret involved the Nero brothers who helped you pursue a bit of gambling.
Someone discovered that talking to the brothers in different part of the game advanced their story, ultimately leading to the end of their story.
If you missed one chat, then too bad – you missed out on being rewarded a Protect Ring.
