What to know about Batman: Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Knight

The final chapter in the Arkham series looks fantastic thus far. And, after numerous delays, Batman: Arkham Knight is due for release on June 23rd, so we thought we’d compile a list of everthing you need to know about the trilogy’s finale.

One year after the death of the Joker, Batman is still struggling to come to terms with the events that transpired during Arkham City. Joker and Batman shared an indescribable connection, deeper than they could admit.

Nevertheless, while Batman’s psyche isn’t in check, the city of Gotham is, or for a time was – crime was even on the decrease.

Enter the Scarecrow, one of Batman’s most insidious opponents, who, having threatened to place toxic bombs throughout the city, has Batman forced back into action – ready or not.

Scarecrow, however, hasn’t come alone. He’s working alongside an all new villain, the Arkham Knight, and the Knight’s huge military like force.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Knight’s story as well as all new character is easily its most appealing aspect.

Batman: Arkham Knight in all of its glory

While Batman: Arkham Knight uses the same engine as Asylum and City, the Unreal Engine 3, it’s practically rebuilt from the ground up and heavily modified as a result.

One of the biggest changes made to Akham Knight‘s development occurred before the game had even started in earnest, dropping the older generation as platforms to play the game on.

When Rocksteady don’t have to accommodate for the, what is now, seriously archaic tech supporting the old consoles, the engine could be tweaked just right. That means much more detail, a more densely populated world, more impressive physics effects and much more besides.

As a means of comparison, one fully detailed model from Arkham Knight has roughly the same amount of polygons entire screens in Arkham Asylum.

The engine also boasts a great view distance, the ability to have up to 50 highly detailed characters on screen at the same time, highly detailed objects and environments, no loading screens, far superior weather effects, more powerful rendering techniques, a number of effects to reduce jaggies and much more.

Best of all, Gotham was then allowed to grow, substantially so. Gotham City is 5 times bigger than Arkham City. That, along with the new resources on tap, encouraged the team to add a form of transport Batman would actually use, like the Batmobile.

Unfortunately, all of this focus on making the game as good as it can be does mean that there will be no online mode of any kind for Batman: Arkham Knight. This move was to assure the best single-player experience possible and to successfully close the Arkham chapter with a focus on storytelling.

The Batmobile

Batman has full control of his vehicle in Arkham Knight. The team wanted to create the ultimate version of the Batmobile while still making it feel authentic.

It’s packed with everything you need: bulletproof armour, a number of anti-collision gadgets, some serious acceleration via a velocity boosting gizmo, and what else but an ejector seat.

Switching from Battle Mode to Pursuit Mode in the Batmobile is as easy as pressing one button, and just as quick to zip around the city.

The vehicle features a wicked high powered 60MM cannon when in Battle Mode, and it packs enough oomph to blow you back for each round spent.

For mowing down the baddies on foot, you can use the Vulcan Gun, an anti-tank mini gun or non-lethal rounds that uses the Riot Suppressor to render enemies unconscious.

The Batmobile will also come equipped with a Grapple Winch. During pursuits, the car can fire Immobilizer Missiles at ease that will home in on opponents and do some damage.

Batman: Arkham Knight

The Batmobile is perhaps the coolest addition to Batman: Arkham Knight.

Batman’s Gadgets

What is a Batman game without the gadgets? Arkham Knight will feature a wide range of gadgets. Here are a few that have been officially confirmed:

Disruptor Rifle: Used to jam weapons before and during combat. This will help Batman get an advantage over enemies, either by him getting the upper hand before combat, or during.

The rifle will feature a long-range scope that can used from afar. In Predator scenarios, the Disruptor can be used to target various enemy devices, rendering them inactive and even turning them against their owners.

The device can be upgraded to disable Drone tanks.

Chain Grapple: The usual grapple use is back, and is used to scale buildings, hang enemies and chained with ejector seat in the Batmobile, Batman is able to cover more ground. You can now also grapple multiple times in succession to scale buildings at double the rate.

I am sure we can expect the usual gadgets to return like the Cryptographic Sequencer, Explosive Gel, remote Batclaw, and Batarang.

Criminals

As far as we know, Arkham Knight will play host to a number of infamous villains: Scarecrow, Harley Quin, The Riddler, Two-face, Penguin, and the new mysterious villain, the Arkham Knight.

The Riddler will be up to his usual shenanigans as he has built missions specifically for your new ride in addition to the usual puzzles you would find scattered around the environment. Apparently, there’s a grand total of 243 Riddler trophies.

The Arkham Knight is an entirely new character created by Rocksteady in collaboration with Warner Bros. He is the main antagonist in the game but little is known of his intentions and motive at this time.

Dual Play

We recently learned that the game will feature a Dual Play mode allowing you to switch between playable characters, similar to Grand Theft Auto V, but not in every circumstance as far as we understand it.
