E3 is what you might call awesome. It’s chock-full of gaming updates, reveals and new hardware.
But sometimes E3 doesn’t go as planned; sometimes the developer or publisher’s ideas about how to market said games or hardware does not go over so well.
From overpriced consoles to immature laser tag performances, these are the biggest E3 fails to date.
PlayStation 3 Priced and Dated
The PlayStation 3 did not have the same sort of reveal and positive publicity the PS4 did; in fact, it was the complete opposite.
When Sony revealed the PS3 back in 2006 at E3, it was a pretty exciting moment. That was until Sony decided to reveal the PlayStation 3 launch price at the same time.
The PlayStation 3 was priced at $499 for the 20GB model and $599 for the 60GB. That is nearly double the price of the PS4, and at the time was extremely high.
The world and the press were not impressed; this launch price was blind robbery compared to the Xbox 360 which started at $299 and $399.
No internet? Buy an Xbox 360.
In 2013, Microsoft revealed the Xbox One to the world, but it was not until E3 that they showed their true colours and revealed that the Xbox One would need some serious internet TLC to operate.
We are talking about connecting to the internet every 24 hours in order for it to operate, DRM encrypted games and an always online scenario.
After much heat, Microsoft still failed to back down. Don Mattrick then added fuel to the fire and told gamers that if you cannot access the internet, buy an Xbox 360.
Although Microsoft have come a long way with their console and reversed almost every negative feature, it was still shocking to see that they really had no idea what gamers wanted.
Nintendo 2008 Press Conference
The Nintendo 2008 press conference was like submerging yourself in a barrel of acid. Nintendo at the time had Super Smash Bros Brawl, Okami and Mario Kart Wii in the works.
Fans were anticipating to see all of these great franchises in action and get a glimpse of what was to come.
Instead we got
- A woman in a pants-suit pretending to snowboard on the Wii Balance Board.
- A woman in a pants-suit screaming at the dog in Wii Sports Resort.
- Reggie’s body jet skiing.
- Reggie saying, “Hey, I like that”.
- Pants-suit woman overreacting to a game she probably tried 50 times.
- Some guy drum soloing for 15 minutes in Wii Music.
- Mario concert with Wii Music.
- Reggie telling us that the entire event was aimed at “enthused” and “engaged” gamers.
- Drum solo.
Konami 2010
Just when you thought it was safe to watch another Konami press conference, the 2010 event took place and brought with it any number of absurdities, weirdos and dancing, oh the dancing.
Being forced to clap for a game reveal is probably the most awkward moment in any event, well until the rest of the Konami event unfolded that is.
Tak Fuji took the podium after revealing Nighty Nine Nights and basically told everyone to clap after it was clear that nobody cared.
And it got weirder.
Half-naked Wrestlers

Death Stares
High as a Kite Presenters
Half-naked Wrestlers Fighting
With E3 a week away, expect to see another list soon, nothing is ever perfect after all.
