Capcom has released a list of their top weird, wacky and oddball cinematic deaths, drawn up for the launch of their video game, Dead Rising 2 – a game which promises countless ways to deal death to hordes of zombies, and of course, some pretty horrible player deaths rewarding mistakes.
Gamers enjoy all forms of escapism, and sometimes it’s nice to sit back and let Hollywood do the work. Capcom understands – below is their list of top 10 cinematic death scenes.
Aliens
Topping the list is John Hurt’s stomach-busting scene in the film 1979 blockbuster Alien. The chilling scene has an alien creature burst out of Hurt’s gut – it’s certainly one of the most memorable deaths in big screen history.
Psycho
The second runner up is the shower scene in from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, a classic from nearly 20 years before Alien. Janet Leigh makes the mistake of taking a shower at Bates Motel, before being repeatedly knifed by Anthony Perkin’s character Norman Bates.
Live and Let Die
Number three is from Live and Let Die, the 1973 James Bond classic in which Roger Moore’s Bond jams a compressed air capsule into villain Kananga’s mouth, forcing him to fatally inflate.
Speed
Fourth place goes to the movie Speed, the 1994 film in which Dennis Hopper gets decapitated by a sign during a fight on top of a speeding subway train.
Jurassic Park
At five is the cringe-worthy scene in 1993’s Jurassic Park, in which a rampaging T-Rex kills a lawyer who is sitting on the toilet.
The Godfather
Number six is 1972’s The Godfather, where gangster James Caan is shot 147 times during the legendary tollbooth ambush scene.
Gremlins
At seven is the death scene in Gremlins (1984) in which a woman is killed by her jet-propelled stair lift.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Raiders of the Lost Ark, made in 1981, snags the eighth spot. The film is often remembered for an almost comical death scene in which Harrison Ford’s fearless Indiana Jones simply pulls out his pistol and shoots a sword-wielding hit man whom moments before made an impressive spectacle of his swordplay prowess.
Jaws
At number nine is the terrifying shark attack in the opening moments of Jaws (1975) in which the rogue great white kills a skinny dipping girl.
Wizard of Oz
At number ten is the scene from the 1939 classic Wizard of Oz in which the Wicked Witch is crushed to death by Dorothy’s house which was dumped from within the spout of a tornado.
Leo Tan from Capcom said, “Deaths in movie history range from the downright comical to extremely bloodthirsty and nearly all movie-goers have a death scene they remember. Any list of movie deaths is bound to be subjective, but we believe we have identified some of the more unusual ones from silver screen history.”
Dead Rising 2 will launch around the world on 24 September 2010, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC release follows one week later 1 October.
