I’m from South Africa, Durban to be exact….firstly, its not that the Dreamcast never really took off over here, it wasn’t even released here, I got my hands on a US Dreamcast from someone else who bought it on import and then sold it. I used to buy Dreamcast magazines from 1999 as I grew up with Sega and always loved to keep up with Sega, I used to see Shenmue in those magazines and that alone was enough to capture me into wanting Shenmue (I had no internet access whatsoever at the time).
2001 was when I was lucky enough to come across this person selling his Dreamcast and as it would have it, Shenmue 1 was included in his bundle…Couldn’t believe it when he told me Shnemue was one of the games he was giving me with the console.
I played and I absolutely loved it, the only game to completely draw you into its world, make you feel for the characters, you forget you’re even playing a game coz of the way the world draws you in, you don’t play Shenmue, you experience it
