Release of the week: Medal of Honor – price roundup

12 October 2010

This week sees the arrival of EA’s long awaited reboot of the iconic Medal of Honor franchise. Military themed shooters are all the rage these days, but Activision’s Call of Duty series has remained untouchable in recent years. Although Bad Company 2 is an excellent game, it did not manage to maintain a consistent mainstream player base, and Medal of Honor is EA’s attempt to get a foothold in the very lucrative mainstream-military-shooter market.

Whether or not it can capture the hearts of gamers remains to be seen, but it has one thing on its side that the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops is sorely lacking; local dedicated servers for the PC version. We have already been able to play the beta on local servers, and while feedback has been mixed, there is no denying that PC gamers are hungry for a new FPS that they can run on local dedicated servers.

There will also be a story driven single player campaign, which will run on a heavily modified version of the Unreal Engine 3 (Gears of War 1,2&3, Mass Effect 1&2, Bioshock 1&2). In an unprecedented move, EA opted to develop the multiplayer component on a completely different engine; Dice’s Frostbite Engine (Various Battlefield titles). In fact, the single player campaign and multiplayer component are being handled by different developers.

Of course, the multiplayer will be what determines whether or not  Medal of Honor can step up and keep pace with the still unrivaled Call of Duty franchise. With pedigree like Dice at the helm, we expect a solid product.

The action will take place in a modern warfare setting, and various US military consultants where enlisted to help maintain a degree of authenticity. The single player campaign will be based on the war which has been taking place in Afghanistan since 2001.

The game is actually available already as a digital download via Steam, but will only become available from local retailers this Friday. To aid in your purchasing decision, we have rounded up local pre-order prices.
