Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is the hottest game right now, and for good reason.
Hideo Kojima has done exactly what he initially promised and crafted the ultimate Metal Gear experience.
So with over 3 million units sold globally in less than a week, it’s hard to consider Kojima’s swansong anything but a success, particularly if you enjoy Kojima’s oddball humour.
MGS V stays true to the franchise’s rather random sense of humour, rooted in cameos from series past, quirky events, hidden gems and pop-cultural references.
It’s something Kojima has done with each Metal Gear Solid title, and something we expected of MGS V.
Having played through and thoroughly enjoyed some of the easter eggs we’ve discovered, we thought we’d compile a list funny events and objects seeded throughout the game.
Kojima Productions Poster
After all of the drama with Hideo Kojima and the studio dubbed Kojima Productions, it’s not surprising that we would see a hint at the studio responsible in-game, and not in the credits either, but a physical poster that looks like a movie poster to the prequel Metal gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.
On this poster, found during the early hospital scene, you see Ground Zeroes Snake standing in the rain with the title ‘Kojima Productions”.
This is typical Kojima, and another way in which he is shoving it in Konami’s face after the split earlier this year.
White Lilies
As it turns out, the White Lilies you get a glimpse of in the earlier parts of the game, as a nurse rearranges them, are much more important than you think.
The Whiten Lilies in the Metal Gear Solid franchise are the “Star of Bethlehem” lilies that were around during the final boss battle in Metal Gear Solid 3.
Naked Snake kills the boss in a field of White Lilies, and the climax comes to an end in an emotional standoff.
Happy Birthday
At the start of the game, you are asked to enter your date of birth.
This might seem pointless at first, given that it has very little to do with the game’s story, but there is more to it. This is a Kojima game we are talking about.
If your birthday happens to be the day that you play the game, you will be asked to return to mother base.
Upon arrival, you will hear alarms sounding and gunfire in the distance. Yes the base is under attack, or is it?
What it really is, is a distraction so that the crew of your base might gather and present you with a cake.
It’s a far better present than we expected, even if we weren’t actually expecting anything.
Quiet’s Yoga
After you recruit Quiet into your team by following the correct path in her mission, she will join you on missions as your “buddy”.
Quiet is an almost entirely naked companion who doesn’t just wear next to nothing but flaunts it too, whether on missions or at Mother Base.
And if you thought that MGS V was being sassy before, then wait until you get your stare on.
All you need do is take Quiet on a mission, which, having completed it and on the ride home via your helicopter, Quiet puts on quite the show.
Overly exaggerated physics, we’re guessing you know what we’re referring to, yoga and very little clothing; it’s all so Kojima.
P.T Reference
Remember P.T, the fantastically terrifying demo for Silent Hills?
With Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro at the helm, it was sure to blow us away. Rather unfortunately, it was canned.
Kojima, tenacious as he is, wasn’t going to let it go that easily and left some references to it in The Phantom Pain.
During Mission 20, in one of the tents you’re guided to by odd voices, you’ll find a familiar cassette and tape recording. The recording is from P.T. and is actually pretty creepy, as it describes a number of odd murders.
Hideo Kojima is once more in game
You can recruit Kojima himself, if you really wanted to. And of course you do.
In order to acquire Kojima as an agent, you can import your Ground Zeroes save data, which you should have uploaded when you completed the game.
Alternatively, if you did not upload it or have yet to play Ground Zeroes, you can import also complete Side Ops Mission 112: Intel Agent Extraction and earn Kojima that way.
He is rather skilled as an S-Rank Communications and A+ ranked R&D Staff member, so place him however you wish.
Your Custom Avatar is everywhere
Creating your custom avatar at the start of the game is not for nothing; it does have a point.
If you think it was all for nothing, try taking a look out of the window as you sit in the helicopter.
You will not see Snake’s reflection as expected, but rather the reflection of your very own avatar.
Falling Boxes
Early in the game, when you first get to Mother base and have yet to upgrade any facilities, you will signs that warm you against falling boxes.
Where do these falling boxes come from? We have no clue, but surely there’s nothing to worry about – boxes don’t just fall from the sky.
If you stand next to this sign for long enough, guess what? A box will fall from the sky and knock Snake to the ground.
It’s actually pretty funny, even if we thought that might happen.
