Release of the week – Call of Duty: Black Ops – prices compared

8 November 2010

This week’s release of the week will be many readers’ release of the year, particularly those of a PC orientated persuasion. Activision’s last release in the franchise, Modern Warfare 2, was a great game, but the multiplayer was marred by a lack of dedicated servers.

Black Ops will not  face the same problem, and local servers are being internally tested as we speak.

The game hits retail shelves tomorrow, and is expected to break the launch sales records set by its predecessor, both internationally as well as here in SA.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is the seventh game in the Call of Duty franchise, and the campaign will put players into the shoes of various black ops agents operating between the 70’s and 80’s.Of course, the multiplayer component is the main draw card to any CoD game, and Black Ops will utilise the same experience point/reward system that has been staple to the CoD series since Call of Duty 4. “Create-a-Class 2.0” will allow players to add unprecedented customization to the game, with players being able to add their own custom clan tags, emblems and attachments to weapons.

An all new currency system is also being added which will allow players to buy weapons and accessories. Players will essentially gamble with their COD points in special wager matches.

PC gamers will be particularly excited about the re-introduction of mod-tools, lean controls, the developer console, and most importantly, dedicated servers. Treyarch’s trademark zombie mode will also make an appearance in Black ops, with players being able to play as John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Fidel Castro and Robert McNamara as they fend off a Zombie invasion.

The game hits shelves tomorrow, so today is your last chance to pre-order it and guarantee your release day copy.
