From arcade flight combat to expertly-crafted role-playing, Star Wars video games have come in various shapes and sizes throughout the years.

With a sci-fi setting filled with lightsabers, jedi, massive battles, and the force, it’s easy to see why so many game developers have tried their hand at making Star Wars games.

The game was developed by Bioware, who are now best known for their work on the Mass Effect and Dragon Age franchises.

The Old Republic is a relatively recent Star Wars Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG). The game is purely multiplayer and features an entire online galaxy for Star Wars fans to inhabit alongside each other.

Although the game has been met with scattered criticism (as with all MMORPGs), it is a genuinely good Star Wars role-playing game – and it’s got some seriously badass trailers.

Honourable Mentions

Star Wars Galaxies (2003)

Star Wars Galaxies is a MMORPG which presented an amazing role-playing aspect, although the game was plagued by marketing issues and money problems, eventually shutting down at the end of 2011.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (2008)

The Force Unleashed is an action-packed Star Wars title with an enjoyable story, but does not rate highly enough amongst critics to merit a place amongst other games on this list.

Star Wars: Battlefront (2015)

The Star Wars Battlefront remake unfortunately does not recapture the magic of Battlefront II, despite looking great. Critics noted that although the game looked amazing and played similarly to the Battlefield series, the amount of actual content was disappointing.
