Over the past weeks MyGaming has been running a poll asking readers for their pick of ‘Indie Game of the Year 2010.’ We thought it would be a bit of fun to summarise the results and deem one lucky gaming title the ‘MyGaming readers’ Indie Game of the Year.’
The choices were as follows:

The results are in, so without further ado, and listed in ascending order of overall vote percentage to raise suspense, below are the MyGaming readerships’ picks for the Indie Game of the Year 2010.
Joe Danger – 0.62%
Joe Danger burst onto the PSN scene with its side scrolling ‘stunt ‘em up’ action. The gameplay is frantic, fast paced, colourful and just darn good fun. There’s plenty of variety and Joe just never gave up on his stunt riding passion.
The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom – 1.23%
This charming silent film inspired puzzle platformer is all about bending time and space in search of delicious pie. The whacky visuals and challenging chrono-puzzles set against an impressionist silent film era environment complete with a funky soundtrack made this one of the most amusing and challenging puzzle-platform games of the year.
The Ball – 3.38%
A first-person action puzzle game from Teotl Studios and a runner-up in the Make Something Unreal competition, The Ball sends players deep into an extinct volcano somewhere in Mexico to discover ancient artefacts and uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of an advanced race of humans. The game features a large ball which the player has to manipulate in order to solve many tricky puzzles, and use as a defensive weapon when the going gets tough. Read MyGaming’s review of The Ball.
Beat Hazard – 3.69%
The humble SHMUP was given an audio-visual overhaul with Beat Hazard, and the best bit is that it was to the tune of your own music. Everything from trance to metal powers the gameplay, creating unique and challenging experiences each time. The whole game was quite cleverly executed and the bundled soundtrack wasn’t half bad either. Read MyGaming’s review of Beat Hazard.
DeathSpank – 7.08%
DeathSpank is an action RPG from the mind of Ron Gilbert (Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island). Witty and humourous dialogue punctuated the frantic 2.5D hack n’ slash action. The game also featured 2-player co-op – it’s always nice to explore a massive world with a buddy. Torchlight blew everyone away in 2009, so DeathSpank is probably the de-facto indie action RPG for 2010.
Other – 11.08%
There are far too many great indie titles that appeared during 2010 for us to honour with a simple poll. For this reason, the ‘Other’ category exists. Congratulations to all of the nameless indie gaming heroes that collectively earned X% of the MyGaming readership’s respect.
Super Meat Boy – 11.38%
Super Meat Boy is the successor to the wildly popular Meat Boy Flash game which debuted in 2008. Super Meat Boy splattered onto Xbox LIVE in October 2010 and the PC release followed in short order. Rather diabolically, the game is as challenging and as it is addictive. The crazy characters, the level design, the sound effects, the meat. Read MyGaming’s review of Super Meat Boy.
LIMBO – 12.62%
Critics agree that LIMBO is just one of those games that must be played. XBLA was blown away by this ingenious puzzle platformer with its notably ruthless yet elegant gameplay and its unique monochrome silhouette visuals. Read MyGaming’s review of LIMBO.
Minecraft – 22.77%
The insanely addictive success story of 2010 – Minecraft went from relative obscurity to international smash hit almost overnight, proving how a good game can go viral with minimum marketing effort. Minecraft provides a vast sandbox for players to explore and interesting crafting mechanics to help them survive the ever-present dangers. Survive, build, experiment, create, and interact with fellow Minecrafters.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent – 26.15%
One of the scariest games of 2010, and MyGaming’s readers choice for Indie Game of the Year. This survival horror completely disempowered the player and left them shivering in a dark corner and mumbling deliriously whilst monsters stalked the foreboding dark passages nearby. Exploring a 19th century Prussian castle plagued with extra-dimensional beings has never been this terrifying. Check out MyGaming’s review of Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
