Some of the developers on this prestigious list shared their insight into how and why humour managed to find its way into their games.
John Murphy, Producer for Octodad said “We realized that our team is full of silly, insane people and we wanted to funnel that energy into the game. Octodad is confused as to why people think he is so funny. He takes himself fairly seriously. However, the Octodad team is very excited to hear that people are enjoying the game’s humor.”
Telltale Games design director Dave Grossman shared the following: “Humor provides a whole additional source of fun for the audience, and we are after all in the entertainment business. Also, my personal view is that the world is a fairly absurd place, which makes it easier for me to make a game funny than to make it serious. Not that there’s anything wrong with serious – I’m just lazy.”
Mike Stemmle, for Sam & Max The Devil’s Playhouse and Back to the Future: “There are moments in your life that stay with you forever. Your first kiss. The birth of your children. That time you bit into a burrito and found a mostly-dead salamander. But these ephemeral zephyrs of joy and revulsion pale in comparison to the soul-tossing tumult of emotions that accompany the news that you’ve has been trebly-blessed by the connoisseurs of comedy at HarryBalls.com. We at Telltale are not sure what we’ve done to deserve such an unalloyed honor, but we promise to keep doing it (whatever it is) in the future.”
