Lumigrid gives you Tron-vision at night

Lumigrid bike light

Riding your bicycle at night is an affair that leaves some distraught with fear and some pumping with adrenaline. Most riders take the precaution of putting on a LED flashlight onto the handlebars, but while this does illuminate things well its not the perfect solution because you may miss objects that are not caught by the light.

One minute you’re cycling along nicely, the next your bike hits a porcupine, sending you and the bike somersaulting through the air, making you miss the next episode of Breaking Bad and hobbling off for an emergency spike extrusion. But this can all be avoided.

Enter Lumigrid. Its a separate attachment for your bike that projects a 2D 13 x 13 block grid onto the ground in front of you. As the bike moves, the grid projects about 2-5 metres ahead of you. Bumps and objects on the road will distort the grid upwards. Holes will distort it downwards and the amount of distortion determines how big the object is.

The Lumigrid is powered by either an internal battery, a dynamo, or a combination of both. The grid size is adjustable (1.4×1.8m; 1.4×2.6m; and 3x2m), which allows riders to group together to make riding in formation easier. Lumigrid is also highly visible at night and at this point it looks like Blue is the only colour available so far.

The Lumigrid will be sold by Yanko Design through their CKIE store later this year. Expect to see your street looking like a TRON set pretty soon!
