According to Reuters, Nvidia is delaying sales of their Shield handheld gaming device, making the decision just one day before it was planned to go on sale. Nvidia now plans to ship the Shield some time in July 2013. The company recently reduced the pre-order price from USD349 to USD299.
Nvidia said it had discovered a “mechanical issue” in the Shield. “The issue relates to a third-party mechanical component, and we’re working around the clock with the supplier to get it up to our expectations,” said Nvidia’s Jason Paul, who is overseeing the company’s Shield project.
The Shield is a tablet PC and game-pad hybrid, which lets users play Android and PC games using the built-in screen or connected to a TV. The Shield is able to use the processing grunt of a desktop PC (running Nvidia hardware) to stream games to the device over Wi-Fi. It uses Nvidia’s Tegra 4 mobile chip, has a fold-out retina display and gamepad-style controls, and runs games available on the Android platform.
