The virtual reality (VR) headset space is getting interesting, with Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley having outed the long-rumoured Sony VR headset project during a Reddit AMAA session.
When asked about plans to implement VR in the upcoming MMO EverQuest Next, Smedley said:
Hearing good things about 2 competitors.. one of which actually comes from Sony. So I’m thinking this is real and we may have our Snowcrash after all.
“Snowcrash” refers to a book by Neal Stephenson, witten in 1992, which covers a lot of science-fiction ground, including the vision of a virtual-reality system that will succeed the current-day Internet.
Sony has been dabbling in head-mounted displays for a while now, and although the units could playback 3D video, they have not fully stepped into the realm of gaming grade stereoscopic 3D.
Let’s hope that any potential Sony VR headset doesn’t carry a similar price tag of R7,500.
