Samsung is developing a virtual reality headset, according to sources close to the company.
Engadget stated that the VR project will be announced before the end of 2014 and is being worked on by the company’s mobile division. With the recent acquisition of Oculus VR by Facebook, and Sony unveiling its own VR headset – Project Morpheus – it seems Samsung does not want to be left behind when it comes to consumer-focused virtual reality products.
According to the reported rumours, the VR headset will look and function similarly to the Oculus Rift and will be powered by Samsung products. It is not the rumoured Galaxy Glass project, though.
The headset will have an OLED screen and will most likely have a wired connection. The Samsung headset will be cheaper than its Sony and Facebook rivals according to the sources, and won’t use the company’s in-house operating system, Tizen.
Looks like the VR race is hotting up. Give us your thoughts in the comments and forum.
